Main Summit Trail or West Trail?
The city's park description identifies the Main Summit Trail as the most popular approach. It passes through Douglas-fir forest before reaching stone stairways near the top.
The West Trail has a steeper rocky section that may require using your hands. Wet rock can make that section especially difficult. Choose the route for your ability and the conditions rather than assuming the shorter option will be easier.
Before starting, decide how you will return and make sure everyone in your group understands the plan. Keep to the designated routes around the summit.
How much time should you allow?
Leave room for the climb, breaks, time at the top, and a careful descent. Fitness, route choice, crowding, and trail conditions all affect how long the outing takes. If you have a fixed appointment afterward, build in extra time rather than planning from a fast recorded hiking pace.
