Tamolitch Blue Pool (Tamolitch Falls) is a McKenzie River Trail day hike east of Eugene on Highway 126: the river runs underground through lava and resurfaces as a striking turquoise pool. It is not a roadside viewpoint like Salt Creek. Expect a real walk on lava rock, a Northwest Forest Pass or posted fee on USFS lots, and seasonal snow or fire restrictions on Willamette National Forest. Swimming is a bad idea — the water is dangerously cold and the rock is slick; manage the site as a lookout, not a swimming hole. Drive time from Eugene is roughly 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 45 minutes in clean weather. The pool is famous because the McKenzie disappears into lava and returns bright blue. The hike is on uneven lava. Heat, ice, and full lots are the real constraints. AllTrails will sell you the selfie. We sell you the drive you will still want in January.
Should you swim?
No. Treat it as a viewpoint. The water is glacier-fed cold, the rock is slick, and rescue here is not a city-park story. Parents: this is not Amazon Pool.
