Plan your Oregon Dunes visit
Your first decision is the type of outing you want. Walking, sandboarding, and off-highway vehicle riding use different access points. Selecting an activity before choosing a destination will help you make the most of your time.
Exploring the dunes on foot
Walking is a good way to enjoy the landscape at your own pace. Choose a route that matches the distance and terrain you’re comfortable with; a short visit and a longer hike call for different plans.
Allow time for walking on sand and make sure you know where your route begins and ends. Check whether dogs are permitted on the specific route rather than assuming one rule applies throughout the dunes.
Sandboarding near Florence
Sand Master Park offers sandboarding and sand-sled options in Florence. If you’re new to the activity, a lesson can help you get started. Contact the park for current rental and lesson information.
This can be the main activity for your day, paired with lunch or a walk in Old Town Florence.
OHV areas and guided rides
Motorized access is limited to designated areas. Review the Forest Service OHV information and the requirements for your vehicle and staging location.
If you’re booking a tour, ask where it departs and what the experience involves. A guided passenger ride and a vehicle rental are different bookings, and departure points may be farther from Florence than you expect.
Passes and seasonal restrictions
Some recreation sites charge a parking or day-use fee. The accepted passes and payment methods depend on the location; a commercial activity may have a separate charge.
Snowy plover protections apply at designated beaches and nesting areas during the March 15–September 15 nesting season. This does not mean the entire dunes recreation area closes. Read current notices and follow posted boundaries at your destination.
A simple day trip from Eugene
Take Highway 126 to Florence, continue to your chosen activity, and leave time for a meal before the return drive. If your trailhead or operator is farther south, include that additional distance in your itinerary.
