Pros and cons of living in Oregon — the Lane County version
Pros: trails, a university calendar, PeaceHealth and UO jobs, a coast you can drive on a Saturday, and a city that is still walkable in pieces. Cons: it rains. Some summers the valley fills with smoke. Duck Saturdays snarl south Eugene. Housing is several markets pretending to be one. Statewide “liveability” pages skip those lines. January is the showing.
Cost of living in Oregon is a fake average
Oregon cost of living mixes Portland rents, Bend second homes, and a Lane County ranch. Housing is the swing line, and housing is the city — then the zip. Eugene’s index sits a bit above the U.S. average and usually under Portland. The bill you will actually pay is on the Eugene cost-of-living page, by pocket. We will not quote a statewide percent as your grocery run.
Best small towns we will actually put you in
Creswell if you want land and still an I-5 job. Junction City if north-valley fields are the point. Coburg if you meant the antique town — Coburg Hills if you meant 97408 acreage. Cottage Grove if south-county is the life. Veneta if Fern Ridge is the water, not the dunes. Florence is the coast, not a small-town suburb of Eugene. Drain is the next town down 38 when Cottage Grove is still too metro. We will not write a “15 cutest towns” essay for places we do not close.
Moving to Oregon is two questions
First: which Oregon. If the answer is Lane County, the tour is moving to Eugene — pre-approval, two pockets, three days. If the answer is Portland or Bend, hire a desk that lives there.
