Eugene is not one school district. 4J covers most of the city (Sheldon, South Eugene, Churchill, North Eugene). Bethel is west Eugene and Willamette High. Springfield is its own district, including Thurston. U.S. News currently ranks South Eugene High #6 in Oregon and #1 in the metro; that does not make every 97405 house a South Eugene house. We will not rank ten schools for you
Heart & Home publishes a “10 best” that mixes 4J elementaries, immersion, Waldorf, Marist, Sheldon, and South Eugene. Families use it. It is still a listicle. Rankings belong to U.S. News, Niche, and GreatSchools. Our job is the real estate: which high school the house feeds, what that does to the buyer pool, and whether you are accidentally shopping Bethel while asking for Sheldon.
4J is four high schools, not one brand
Sheldon is the Cal Young / Gilham / north-Eugene family search. South Eugene High is Amazon, College Hill, Fairmount, and a lot of the south hills — U.S. News’s #6 in Oregon. Churchill is southwest 97405 and Bailey Hill; it is still 4J. North Eugene is Santa Clara and River Road. Eugene International High School sits on three campuses. Look the address up on 4J’s Find My School. A 2023 feeder sheet is not a 2026 guarantee.
Bethel and Springfield are not 4J
97402 is often Bethel — Willamette High, IB pathway, U.S. News #11 in the metro. Springfield High and Thurston High are Springfield School District 19. Thurston is the east-side value-and-schools fork a lot of relocators actually want. Buying “Eugene” on a map pin does not pick the district.
Immersion, choice, and the thing people forget
Buena Vista (Spanish), Charlemagne (French), Yujin Gakuen (Japanese), and Hé Lín (Chinese) are 4J schools you apply into. They are not the default for a Cal Young ranch. 4J school choice has a calendar. If the program is the point, we time the house around the application — not the other way around. The search is South Eugene High. The budget is a Springfield payment. We will say that out loud: Amazon and College Hill are not a 97477 number. Sheldon / Cal Young is the usual compromise. Thurston is the honest value fork. Shawna taught elementary school. She will not sell you a ranking.

What are the best schools in Eugene, Oregon?+
U.S. News currently ranks South Eugene High #6 in Oregon and #1 in the metro, and Sheldon #52 in Oregon / #2 in the metro. Those are their ranks, not ours. The house question is which district the driveway feeds. Start with 4J’s map.
Is South Eugene High School the best?+
It is the one ranking sites put first locally. It is also a specific set of neighborhoods, a UO-adjacent calendar, and a price. Best for a 4.0 hunter is not best for every family.
What neighborhood is Sheldon High School?+
Cal Young, Gilham, and much of north 97401 / 97408. Confirm the elementary. Team Burke will not guess from a zip.
Is Bethel the same as 4J?+
No. Willamette High School is Bethel School District 52, mostly west 97402. Churchill High is 4J. Mixing them is how relocators buy the wrong west side.
Are Springfield schools part of Eugene 4J?+
No. Springfield School District 19. Thurston High is the east-side campus a lot of families actually want. Springfield High is a different campus.
Can I choose a 4J school if I buy outside the boundary?+
Sometimes, through 4J school choice, on their calendar, with no guarantee. Immersion schools are choice-only. Do not write an offer on a rumor. Read 4J’s choice page.
Do school ratings affect home prices in Eugene?+
Yes, in the pockets people already pay for — Cal Young, south hills, some 97408. A ranking does not make a slope house a bargain. It does change who shows up in week one.
